Our work to support the community needs your help

Like all charities, we rely on the generosity of our funders and supporters to continue our work.

Financial security is an ever-present worry for everyone in the sector and as a result, we are ever careful to acknowledge where our money comes from and take not a single penny of it for granted.

Our funds come from many different sources, not least Torbay Council who currently fund our Community Building team because they recognise the valuable work they do across the Bay.

In previous years, we have been lucky enough to work with the National Lottery’s Community Fund, which has invested millions of pounds in the Bay through Torbay Communities and numerous other beneficiaries.

Many other smaller pots of money are equally important in enabling us to deliver our services through the Helpline, out in the community or supporting others to the same.

Our current funders also include AgeUk, DeVA, Kings College London, Living Options Devon, NAVCA, NHS Charities Together, NHS Devon, Pluss, Sanctuary, Step One, the University of Plymouth, The Young Foundation and the Womens Wellbeing Club.

Don’t be fooled, despite the benevolent intent the charity sector is a very competitive marketplace with many groups and organisations vying for the same pots of money from government, foundations, individuals or even corporate philanthropic grantors.

A great deal of time can be spent attracting the right funders for the right projects and it can be a complicated process, and whilst we make our own applications, we also have our community advisor, Steven Chown on hand to help smaller organisations successfully find their way through the complexity of funding streams.

But in addition to the formal routes to funding, we often receive donations from people who have been helped or in memory of someone close to them who has been helped.

However, in a struggling economy where the purse strings get ever tighter, we are now seeking more help from within our communities across the Bay and we are seeking help from people prepared to fundraise for us.

Rest assured every penny raised will be spent in the Bay and we hope everyone will have fun whilst raising much-needed funds that will ultimately help their friends and neighbours.

It may well be that you want to join with others to perhaps form a fundraising group to spread the load whilst planning anything from an event to a small gathering.

We make no bones about it, we can’t continue without our fundraisers. It’s as simple as that.

Your dedication, passion and energy fund vital work that makes for better, healthier and happier communities. It also ensures our Helpline is there with practical advice, information and guidance delivered by our team of staff and volunteers.

Our Community Builders help run community support groups that take away loneliness and isolation. It means we can continue to fight for better care for everyone.

We have compiled a list of around 200 fundraising ideas and will be rolling out a few of them in the next few months. Some are social, some are entertaining and others are challenging; the choice is yours.

Here are our top tips for raising as much money as possible:

Set a target – this will help to give your fundraising focus

Make it unique –  people enjoy taking part in something new and interesting – try to think of ways to make your event different (see our A-Z of fundraising if you need inspiration)

Social Media –Share what you are doing with your followers via Facebook, Twitter/X, Instagram and LinkedIn – this will show people how passionate you are about your cause

Advertise – we can add information about your event to our website and social media, to make sure people know it is happening

Gift Aid – if your event is sponsored, you can raise 25p more for every £1 you raise. If your sponsors are taxpayers, ask them to tick the Gift Aid box and provide their address on your sponsorship form, to make the donation go that bit further.

If you simply want to make a donation you can via our website: www.torbaycommunities.com/donate/ or if you want to find out more about fundraising, choose from literally hundreds of ideas, and download the fundraising pack, go to: www.torbaycommunities.com/fundraise/

Thank you. We can’t do what we do without you.
