Summer has officially arrived across Chelston, Cockington and Livermead, and the next couple of months are packed with events, activities and community happenings for all ages. From outdoor theatre to family fun days and creative meet‑ups, there’s no shortage of ways to make the most of the season right on our doorstep.

The Grand Hotel is kicking things off in style with A Night at the Oscars Murder Mystery on Saturday 11 July, promising glamour, intrigue and plenty of laughs. The hotel will also host a feel‑good favourite later in the season, with the Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again! Party on Sunday 2 August — a perfect excuse to dig out your dancing shoes.

Over in Cockington, Illyria Theatre returns to the grounds of Cockington Court with a trio of outdoor performances. Audiences can enjoy Pride of Prejudice on Wednesday 15 July, Pinocchio on Wednesday 29 July, and Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor on Wednesday 5 August. Pack a picnic, bring a blanket and settle in for an evening of open‑air entertainment.

The Livermead House Hotel is also adding sparkle to the season with its Summer Spectacular Dinner & Show on Saturday 25 July. More details can be found on the hotel’s website for those looking to book a special night out.

Families won’t want to miss the ever‑popular Victoria Park Play Day on Wednesday 5 August, between 1 and 4pm. Offering an afternoon of free fun and activities, it also brings the return of the much-loved slip & slide! And just a few days later, WainFest returns on Saturday 8 August — a lively community celebration hosted by The Haywain, with full details available on their Facebook page.

Alongside the big events, one Chelston business continues to shine as a hub of creativity and connection. The Blue Walnut Café Bar & Cinema on Walnut Road has become a go‑to spot for community‑minded activities, and July’s theme for their Community Blockbusters Film Nights is all things sport, tying in nicely with the bumper calendar of sporting events we have got going on right now. Visitors can pop in to see what’s showing and book tickets.

The café also hosts their Crap Film Club, monthly Book Clubs (for both children and adults) and regular Open Mic Nights. For those seeking something a little different, Tarot Share Evenings, in collaboration with Spirit Tree Holistics, are happening every month as well as Sip & Paint sessions with local artist Susana GB.
