24 Mar SPRING IS NOW BLOOMIN’! – COMMUNITY MATTERS
By Usha Garrattley, Community Builder for Ellacombe & Plainmoor
As I write, spring is on its way. Spring is such a lovely time of the year, with the warmer weather and the lighter nights and taking walks to see the flowers in bloom and trees in bud. And there’s plenty more going on to get out and enjoy in and around our neighbourhoods.
The drop-in on the 2nd Monday of the month at Coopers Coffee House restarts on 8th May between 10am and 12pm and there is a new drop-in incorporating Craft making on the 3rd Friday of the month from 9:30 to 11:30am starting on the 21st April at 17 Market Street, the previous Ellacombe Community Cafe – Drop in to find out about other activities in your area, get support to get something started or just to say hello…
If you enjoy a quiz you should make your way to the Royal Hotel & Carvery on Babbacombe Downs on the 3rd Wednesday of each month from 11am to 12:15pm for the Fun Get-together and Quiz.
The Evening Stroll Group will re-commence their walks at the beginning of April on a Monday evening from 7pm with gentle walks alternating between Babbacombe Downs and Torquay Harbour.
On every 2nd Friday of the month, Singing for Fun comprises songs, memories, refreshments and chat, and takes place in Victoria Park Christian Centre, opposite Lidl in St Marychurch Road from 2:30pm to 4pm and costs £2.
In the course of my work I meet people who, for whatever reason, are unable to get out and about and who would love someone to pop in and see them for a chat to brighten their day. A small commitment of time in reaching out to people experiencing such isolation can make a big difference to their lives. Research has shown that when we help others, we help ourselves – by fulfilling our sense of purpose, making us feel connected and generally improving our mental wellbeing. As Volunteer Telephone Befriender, David Evans says “My life is infinitely richer as a result of volunteering”.
If you would like to find out more about making that neighbourly gesture to someone feeling isolated or to find out more about any of the above and other activities happening, please give me a call today!
