PITCHING IN AROUND TORQUAY TOWN CENTRE – COMMUNITY MATTERS

By Ceri Silk, Community Builder for Torquay Town Centre

As a Community Builder, I focus on what’s strong, what’s possible and what works in our local area. I feel very privileged to be part of some of the many awesome, caring activities that are happening in Torbay.

The Torquay Coastal Volunteers (TCV) meet regularly on the first Thursday of the month to care for Torwood Coastal path (near the Imperial Hotel) with a range of green space activities from gardening to painting.

On March 30th, this group also braved the weather and linked with the Great British Clean Up national initiative of Keep Britain Tidy, to run a litter-picking event from Beacon Cove, to Daddyhole Plain. They not only helped to clear the area of rubbish and improve the environment, but they also showcased their most recent achievements with planting Peaked Tor Cove beds and repairing the stone walls. This friendly group welcome new members, so why not pop along and enjoy caring for this beautiful space with your neighbours.

Over the King’s Coronation weekend, we have The Big Help Out national initiative, giving everybody a chance to try volunteering for themselves and make a difference in their community. www.coronation.gov.uk/get-involved.

In Torbay, The Big Help Out starts on Sunday 7th May on Abbey Meadows, Torquay with organisations from across the Bay showcasing their work and volunteering opportunities. This day will also provide a focus for Big Help Out projects being organised for Monday, May 8th. For more information and to get involved on Sunday 7th May and/or to share your Coronation Big Help Out initiatives, please email; [email protected].

There will be plenty of opportunities around the Bay to get involved in this summer. The English Riviera Visitor Information Centre is looking for some enthusiastic volunteers. Please contact Katrine, [email protected] / 01803 211211. The Torbay Together website (www.devonconnect.org/torbay) has lists of volunteering activities, from gardening to phone befriending.

Also, if you have ideas on improving your local neighbourhood, please share them with me on 07931567885 / [email protected], and I can connect you with other like-minded passionate people to make things happen.
