Pirate-themed sculpture trail berths at Cockington Court

“Seas the Day” built by the crew at The Shed at Chelston Workshops

The 2024 Sculpture Trail at Cockington Court has arrived. Last year’s theme on Outer Space was extremely popular and this year’s theme on Pirates and the Deep Sea is causing a great deal of excitement already. The trail runs from 28th July – 3rd November and includes magnificent creations from 24 different artists. According to visitors, the trail is inspirational, educational and moving from strength to strength.

The Shed at Chelston Workshops have joined the ranks and have built a pirate ship. The repair shop in Torquay is encouraging people to take photos with the ship and to post them online, tagging the Shed at Chelston Workshops (@shedchelstonworkshops on Facebook). All of the makers have worked very hard and have produced some fantastic artwork for all to enjoy.

This year is proving very special, as an extension to the sculpture trail is now available. A Children’s Voyage Trail, which extends across the grounds of Cockington and features the local businesses. The Cockington Visitor Centre will also be re-opening from 7th August. With Torbay Communities working in partnership with The Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust to make this happen. Cockington Court and the Friends of Cockington Country Park have also been instrumental in these plans. If you would like to join the team of volunteers at the Cockington Visitor Centre, then please do contact me on [email protected].

The space is for volunteers to share what is available in Cockington. Showing off the creatives, the heritage, the nature, the events and all that makes Cockington the gem that it is. There will also be space set aside as a community hub, where activities will take place, people can hangout and engage in projects. This is an exciting development.

You will also be able to find out more on Torbay Communities and the 10-year celebrations that they have planned. The Torbay Coast and Countryside Trust will also have a display celebrating their 25th year. Lots of potential and fun already in store. A sublime community effort all around.

Keep an eye out on my Facebook page for updates in and around the ward of Cockington, Chelston and Livermead. A collaboration with Sherwell Valley Primary School is coming soon, as were developing edible gardens and a wellbeing community hub with some teams of volunteers. An event at Victoria Park, Chelston with Play Torbay and community groups is also taking place this on August 7th 1pm-4pm.  Have a lovely summer!
