Community-based opportunities aplenty with our Community Builders

Community Builders Amanda & Jennie (centre) with members of the community

One of the most lauded projects under Torbay Communities has been the Community Builders’ team, established during the trust’s early days, back when we were known by that mouthful of a title – Torbay Community Development Trust, beginning as part of the definitive Ageing Well Torbay programme, funded thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund (known initially as the Big Lottery Fund). The team assembled with the important mission of bringing their communities together, from patches and wards across the Bay, to provide an opportunity for lonely and socially isolated Torbay residents over the age of fifty, to connect or reconnect with their figurative and literal neighbours.

Since the end of Ageing Well Torbay in early 2022, and upon receiving further funding from new sources such as Torbay Council, the team are now working with people of all ages to find potential connections and assets, to unite people and create something bigger, better and stronger together.

You’ll typically find your local Community Builder in the midst of community action in your neighbourhood. It may be they’re working alongside community projects such as Leah’s efforts to help breathe new life into Winner Street, Paignton and Ceri and Tracy supporting murals in community spaces around Torquay. Or on another occasion, they might be organising or helping out at events and activities ranging from Darth Vader’s Christmas grotto down at Cockington Court last year (courtesy of Joey) to the Big Exchanges at locations around Torbay, where you can grab a rare find (or find new homes to anything you no longer want or need) completely free of charge!

Frequently working alongside the likes of AgeUK Torbay & Brixham Does Care’s Wellbeing Coordinators who aim to connect people to the services they urgently need, as well as community partnerships striving to give voice to the community on important local developments, there is many potential routes a Community Builder could help you down.

If you have an idea for the community you would like to explore, are interested in meeting any like-minded peers or simply want to make new friends, speak to your local community builder, and they’ll guide you towards all sorts of opportunities locally.

The team have also been a crucial element of the Torbay Community Helpline, beginning their duties at the start of the pandemic offering urgent shopping and prescription medication delivery to the housebound and vulnerable during lockdowns. A drastic change from their regular jobs, but one they rose to the occasion on, and continued to help signpost locals towards essential services, as for many, they may only get the opportunity to speak and share with a few others on occasion, making outreach from the likes of the Community Builders crucial to keeping everyone connected.

An imaginative, friendly and dedicated bunch, the Community Builders are now currently looking to add two new team members to their numbers, in part-time roles, one for Paignton, and another for Torquay. A rare opportunity to find such an engaging, community-based role, if your ideal job is one where you can help establish, empower and intertwine community connections, look no further.

Confidence, kindness, and community-minded are key attributes for any would-be applicants. A positive attitude towards life, good communication skills as well as a basic level of IT literacy (as tech becomes ever more vital and inescapable in everyday life, but don’t threat – we provide training) are essential for this post.

To apply, download the required documents from our job opportunities page, complete the application form, and submit to Community Builder Lead Coordinator Amanda Lynn by 5pm, 25th April 2024.
