Looking back and moving forward

The return of the Wellswood Xmas Fayre this year was a brilliant success! The street was buzzing with people singing carols, dancing to music, star gazing through telescopes and even eating oysters!

Torbay Communities’ talented Community Builders and wonderful volunteer, Lorraine Myrie, made 50 fabulous Sock Snowmen with excited children and their parents who also saw Father Christmas and Mark Poulton’s puppet show.

Outside The Velvet Buccaneer Bar, an intrepid poi dancer was eating fire!…and outside Hays Travel, the sensational stage line-up featured Sandy Sparkle, Ilsham School Choir, Harbour Bells, Ukrainian Singers, Riviera FM, Angels and Mavericks and the Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Next year we are doing it all over again on Thursday 12th December – See you there!

I hope that your New Year resolutions are going well…maybe this will be the year that you will venture out to try something new, join a group in your local neighbourhood and perhaps meet your new best friend at one of our fabulous groups in Wellswood…from coffee mornings at the Kents Pub and Kents Cavern Café to afternoons of Music at the Museum, Book club, Writers group, Knit and Natter at Ilsham’s Café and the Meadfoot Sea Walk, there’s something for everyone and always a warm welcome!

As Community Builders, our job is to listen to people and to learn…we often ask you how we can come together to do this better.

Since King Charles’ diagnosis this week, we are hearing a lot of people talking about cancer. One in two of us will get cancer and some of our coastal area is an underserved population for early diagnosis.

We die earlier from cancer, we are less likely to go for early tests, and we are the least likely to take part in research to improve our outcomes and those of our loved ones. Screening programs for bowel, breast and cervical cancer save 5,000 lives a year and were developed through people taking part in research.

We want to find out what could make it easier for people in Torbay to take part in this vital research for positive cancer outcomes. How would you like to hear about research opportunities and how would you like to be invited to take part in this important work? What would make it easier for you?

Please get in touch with me by phone or email [email protected] telephone 07469660875 or with your local community builder to tell us.

We can all make a difference for each other!
