GET INTO THE RHYTHM OF THE NEW YEAR – COMMUNITY MATTERS

By Christine Durrant, Community Builder for Preston

The new year is upon us, and many people will already be regretting some of the excesses of the festive period and thinking about how to lose a few pounds. I am not a great believer in diets – in my experience, they just make you think more about food and you end up permanently hungry and piling more pounds on. However, fun exercise with fun friends is a great way to get fit, keep smiling and lose a few pounds while you’re at it!

I recently heard about Saffanah’s Beginners Belly Dance classes and I thought, ‘What a great way to start the new year! Belly dance is adaptable to any age from 15 years upwards and can be adapted for most fitness levels. You get to keep fit and tone up your body at the same time. And every belly dancer I have ever met has been a happy, fun-loving person, so you can expect lots of fun and laughter while you learn.

Jen and Lyn have been dancing this style of dancing for over 25 years and delivering classes together since 2017. We don’t all learn the same way so to have a choice of teacher is an invaluable asset. They are even offering a free trial week so you can see if it suits you. After that, it is just £20 for 5 weeks or £5 per session (pay as you go).

All you need are soft or dance shoes so you can flex your feet, and stretchy, comfortable clothing so you can move easily. Bring a long scarf or belly dance belt to tie around your hips. Some spare belts are available at the classes. Go along and learn how to do some sparkling shimmies in 2023. Giggles AND wiggles, now, doesn’t that sound like fun?

You can also contact us to find out what is going on in your area or to share your brilliant ideas so together with you, we can make Torbay the best place possible to live. We are particularly keen to hear from the 20 – 30 age group as we are finding it hard to find groups aimed at this age group and we would like to change that.
