Crafty ways for the community to come together

Craft groups have become a beloved staple in many local areas in recent years, offering a welcoming space for residents to express their creativity and form lasting friendships. These groups, which range from knitting circles to mindfulness craft, provide more than just an outlet for artistic expression—they offer a sense of belonging and support through socialising with like-minded people.

One such group that has only just started is the Crafty Torre’s (meeting once a month), hoping to increase that to fortnightly, then weekly – the next one is Thursday, 20th June 1-3pm at the All Saints Church Hall, Bampfylde Rd, Torre. The June session will focus on Decorative Shells; all materials are provided, including tea and coffee (donations are welcome). Of course, if you just want to come along to be a part of the group, then please do and bring your own craft if that works better for you. We are very lucky to have the wonderful Nicola of ‘Lil Bea’s Crafts’ running the group, where attendees can share their skills, learn new techniques, and collaborate on community projects, such as creating handmade decorations for community events.

The Noble Tree Café (173 Union Street) runs a Book Club on the 3rd Wednesday of the month, and now a new Craft group on the 2nd Wed of the month (3-5.30pm), where you can take along your own project, enjoy a lovely coffee or tea (or the amazing Chai Latte!!) Please get in touch with Tracey from the Noble Tree for more information – 07557 106439.

Another great space is Cricketfield Community Garden (attached to Torquay Academy in Cricketfield Rd) – an amazing community garden space where you will soon be able to engage in Chicken Therapy (yes really!). Did you know you can already visit on a Tues or Thurs 10am – 2pm to volunteer onsite and learn how to be involved with all that the 2 acres can provide, or how about Sponsoring a Tree? Yes, you can do this also!

The upcoming Summer fete at the Garden on August 10th will feature stalls focusing on nature, live music, Tombola, workshops in the Education Shed. These events provide a platform for residents to visit the Garden, see the amazing work the volunteers have produced and meet the new ‘Friends of’ Team! Please check the notice boards and Facebook pages to find out more details closer to the time. They are also looking for volunteers to support on the day, so please contact [email protected]

There is also a lot of focus on local history. We are looking to put Torre back on the map with a self-guided walking tour of Torre pointing out all the significant buildings and areas of interest that connect with historical persons and events…more to follow…

If you would like to chat about anything else you would like to see in Torre or Upton, or if you need further info on any of the above, please get in touch. Maybe you have an idea you would like to get off the ground but need help starting it or finding a venue? Please, contact me on 07977 187138 or email on [email protected]
