19 May Coronation Festivities around Hele, Watcombe & Barton – Community Matters
By Theo Tanser, Community Builder for Hele Watcombe & Barton, Coordinator for Torbay Timebank & Community Builders’ External Relations
The Acorn Centre in Barton celebrated the Coronation on Saturday 6th May and this is what they say:
“It was lovely to see the Centre bustling with smiley faces and laughter and we can’t wait to do it all again!”
The Medway Community Centre celebrated that evening:
“A right royal knees up party at Medway Centre, including BBQ, disco and raffle all made possible by the Community fund, meaning we were able to provide this event for free! Tickets all went within 2 hours of posting on FB and the rest is a whirlwind of red, white and blue, disco lights and hotdogs! The children enjoyed dancing and prizes were won. Our very own crown, crocheted by a volunteer, really made the selfie booth special. It was a fun-filled evening had by all, with thanks to all who volunteered on the night to make this a huge success.”
At St Martin’s Church hall on Sunday 7th: Children enjoyed crafts and a bouncy castle, whilst adults enjoyed good company, conversation, a quiz, bingo, music…and the buffet of course! Volunteer Hannah Parsons commented on the great community spirit that saw this event come together so nicely. The Church Hall is becoming something of a community hub, with recently launched family cooking classes, and hosts a range of fantastic groups. The next big gathering to get involved with is the Grand Summer Fete on Saturday 24th June – details soon!
The Big Help Out – On Sunday I was in the Volunteer Torbay marquee all day on Torre Abbey Meadows drumming up volunteers for the following day when we had people attend Cricketfield community Garden and Torquay Train station. Two wonderful projects to attract volunteer gardeners to develop the green spaces around the Train station or to do some community gardening at Cricketfield with Paddy and Jemma Cain.
