Celebrating Preston’s Christine Durrant – Community Matters

Sometimes, you don’t necessarily know what impact you have made on others, but this certainly was not the case with the recent retirement of colleague, Christine Durrant, who had served the Community of Preston as their Community Builder for the last eight and a half years.

Her “time in the Community” was honoured with a “Celebration of Preston” past, present and future (she will be replaced by our colleague Nina, who is well known in her current patch of Foxhole), and the celebration was attended by more than 100 people whose lives Christine had touched.

Everyone was asked to share their hopes and big dreams for Preston, add unrecognised assets to a map of the local area, tell their tales of the ripple effect that their involvement in community activities has had on themselves and those around them, and share their stories and dreams for things they would like to see grow in the community.

Alongside tea and cake, there was the opportunity for many reflections that all our communities could perhaps benefit from, but it was also smothered in love and appreciation for things that had happened to date.

The asset-based approach that guides the way that Torbay Communities works, offers everyone a voice, and the chance to make a difference, from social groups to community actions, litter picks, daytime discos, specialist activities, and intergenerational activities.

If you would like to make a difference or just find a way back out into circulation, your local Community Builder is there to help, and if the thing that lights your passions is not happening in your part of the Bay, your Community Builder will try to find somewhere where it is, or help you find likeminded people to create your own group.

One thing is for sure: we only get one chance at life, and some good things need to be searched for,  so with a new year looming and shorter days giving us more time at home to ponder our fate,  why not use this time productively to contact your local community builder, and get 2024 off to a great start by finding your new passion, extending your social circle,  and living life to the full.
