24 Oct Building Community Connections: A Rewarding Journey

In the heart of our community, the role of a lead coordinator brings immense fulfilment. Each day, I am inspired by the stories shared by our communities, and I am continually amazed by the serendipity that unfolds, affirming that we are on the right path.
Reflecting on my own upbringing in Torquay, I remember a time when community bonds were strong. Living with my Mum and Sister just four doors down from my Nan and Poppy, I was surrounded by neighbours we affectionately referred to as our Aunties and Uncles. Those were magical days, and I feel fortunate to have experienced the essence of a supportive community where everyone looked out for one another.
However, as we navigate life, we sometimes lose these vital connections with family, friends, and neighbours, leading to feelings of isolation for various reasons. That’s why we take the time to listen when we meet someone new, whether through a referral from the Community Helpline or out and about in the neighbourhood. We strive to understand their wishes, hopes, aspirations, and goals. We also ask them to reflect on what activities once brought them joy, as it’s easy to forget these moments, especially during challenging times.
Witnessing the spark of recognition in someone’s eyes as they recall happier times is truly rewarding. We call this approach “going where their energy is,” and it guides our efforts to reconnect individuals with their passions.
Last year, we reached out to the community members we had engaged with, seeking their feedback on our work. We dubbed this initiative “Feedback Bubbles,” and we are incredibly grateful for the insights we received, which confirm that we are indeed moving in the right direction.
As we continue this journey, we remain committed to fostering connections and uplifting our community. Together, we can create a brighter future for all.
This was some of the feedback we received:
“About five years ago, I was feeling down and lonely. I went to meet the lovely Community Builders in St Marychurch & Babbacombe and they introduced me to another lady who was needing the company of other people. We visited each other often, then joined with other people and before long we were meeting a few days a week along with Community Builders and the groups. We are still meeting with new people all the time. The Community Builders changed my empty old life and got me living again and being with lovely happy people.”
“ I am extremely grateful for my Community Builder in Brixham, Helen. She has taken me out of my depths of despair and introduced me to Men’s Shed, where Gary, Peter and Co are all very accommodating and friendly. And the best thing she did was introduce me to the Motoractive Exercise Centre. The group of ladies and men in there made me feel very welcome. I have made some lovely friends and am even going to their Christmas Lunch and Christmas Dinner! Helen has been a lifesaver; quite literally saved my life, especially after my partner passed away only three weeks ago. I don’t know where I would be without her.
This column is dedicated to Len who wrote the second piece, who sadly passed away in Dec 23.
