Baton of Hope’s tour around Torbay needs volunteers!
The good news? Over 100 people have signed up to be Baton Bearers. However, we need a large number of volunteers on hand to support them and ensure this event runs smoothly.

The volunteering roles available:
- Pre-Baton Marshals: This role is to make sure that there are no obstacles in the way and to liaise with the public that the Baton is coming through. Any major obstructions will need to be called in to the Walk Leaders, you will have contact with the Walk Leaders, security. You will be walking part of the zone and swapping with the next team of Pre-Baton Marshals. Radio Usage Required.
- Stern/Rear Baton Marshals: This role will be to protect in a way of a visual presence at the rear of the Walking party in a high vis jacket. Once Baton Bearers have carried the Baton they are welcome to join as are members of the public to Join the walking party behind the Baton, this could get very long and to keep the walking party safe we would need it to be highly visible and also making sure that those walking do not walk in the roadway. You will be walking part of the zone and swapping with the next team of Stern/Rear Marshals. Radio Usage Required.
- Deputy Walk Leaders: This role is to support the walking leads, should one become sick or unwell, or the Baton Bearer is not in their position you will need to step in until you get to the next role is to also give comfort and support to those carrying the Baton who may become emotionally upset. You will be walking part of the zone and swapping with the next team of Deputy Walk Leader. You are very welcome to continue the walk and support those who are also following that Baton.
- Route Marshals: We need to cover Torquay, Brixham and Paignton and even though the route has been planned in a way to not cause to much disruption we will still need route marshals in key locations such as the town centres and at traffic crossings, these roles are very important and an integral part of the planning. This role is static, and you will be placed at a certain location to assist with the safe transportation of the Baton and its participants.
- Event Marshals: During the Baton Route, there will be an events village on Princess Gardens in Torquay, and we will need a number of volunteers to aid with its safe running. This role is in a set location and you may be required to carry a collection bucket for donations, give directions to toilets or organisations that will be on-site. You may also find yourself giving people a listening ear or assisting them to find the right support onsite.
