On a bright spring morning at Kenneth Court, Shiphay, the spirit of Easter came alive with children’s laughter and the warmth of a close-knit community.

It was the day of the annual Exe Hill School children’s Easter egg hunt – a simple tradition that had grown into something much more meaningful, a celebration of sharing, kindness, community and togetherness.

While children’s eyes widened with anticipation, clustered near the starting point, volunteers from the community had spent time carefully hiding dozens of chocolate eggs, waiting to be discovered.  A couple of easter eggs were nearly spotted by an eagle-eyed seagull, watching avidly from the rooftops.

At the signal to begin, the children dashed off in all directions. Some searched behind benches, others peeked under the shrubs, and a few worked together, calling out excitedly whenever they found a hidden egg.  What stood out the most was not the competition, but the cooperation.  Some children gently guided others, pointing out hiding spots and sharing without hesitation.

One little boy (the children were aged between 4 and 5 years old), having gathered a handful of eggs, noticed another child struggling to find any.  Without a second thought, he handed her two of his own eggs. Moments like these captured the true essence of the day.

Easter, often associated with chocolate and celebration, revealed its deeper message here: generosity, compassion, and the joy of giving.  The teachers from the local school smiled as they watched their pupils interact outside the classroom.  The egg hunt became an extension of the values they encourage every day: respect, empathy, sharing and community spirit. Learning, after all, doesn’t only happen within the confines of the classroom; it thrives in shared experiences like this.

The celebrations continued with some refreshments in the communal lounge, and the residents had kindly donated Easter Eggs for the children. At Kenneth Court, Easter was not just an event marked on a calendar; it was a reflection of what a community could be at its best.  In a world that often feels hurried and disconnected, this gathering served as a gentle reminder of the importance of slowing down, reaching out, and supporting one another.

As the day drew to a close, children left with more than sweets and chocolate eggs – they carried with them the memories of sharing, friendship, and the joy of giving.  And for everyone present, the true spirit of Easter, hope, renewal, and kindness.
