22 Aug Alpaca ambassadors visit Kenneth Court
In a heartwarming event that brought joy and laughter to many, Cola and Pablo, two charming alpacas, visited Kenneth Court in Shiphay where they were also greeted by 60 enthusiastic schoolchildren from Exe Hill Academy.
On a warm and sunny day in July, this delightful occasion was orchestrated to foster an intergenerational, interactive community event promoting well-being and showcasing the unique bond between animals, children, and older people.
Cola and Pablo, the furry ambassadors, known for their gentle nature and fluffy soft coats, are no ordinary alpacas. Hailing from Gatcombe Park Farm, in Devon, renowned for its community outreach programs, these fury ambassadors have been trained to interact with people of all ages.
Alpacas, native to the South American Andes, are celebrated for their friendly dispositions and calming presence, making them ideal candidates for therapeutic visits.
Cola and Pablo arrived at Kenneth Court, with the residents beaming with smiles as they walked them around the lush green lawns; the presence of these gentle animals created an atmosphere of excitement and curiosity, evoking sparkling and lively conversations.
The school children were brimming with energy and lots of questions too. They eagerly learned about alpacas’ unique characteristics, such as their soft, hypoallergenic fleece, their necks are the same length as their legs, and they are very curious. Cola and Pablo’s patient and affectionate natures quickly won over the residents and school children, who took turns petting and feeding them. This event underscored the importance of intergenerational activities in fostering community spirit and enhancing the well-being of both young and old.
Research has shown that interactions between different age groups can have profound benefits. For older people, these interactions alleviate feelings of loneliness and isolation, common issues in sheltered accommodation. Engaging with children brings a sense of vitality and joy, often leading to improved mood and cognitive function. For children spending time with older adults provides valuable life lessons and fosters respect and empathy.
This activity of sharing and participating with the alpacas created a space for meaningful connections to flourish; the smiles and laughter shared between all, Cola and Pablo, were a testament to the day’s success.
