30 Sep A FRESH START FOR AUTUMN – COMMUNITY MATTERS
By Usha Garrattley, Community Builder for Ellacombe & Plainmoor
Septembers are for fresh starts! so I read recently, and as a fabulous summer comes to an end and autumn arrives with days becoming colder and nights drawing in, there’s a lovely fresh start to look forward to with the beginning of a new Singing for Fun group. They meet every 2nd Friday of the month in Victoria Park Church, 121 St Marychurch Road from 2:30pm to 4:00pm.
Research has shown that singing can be good for you on many levels: it reduces stress, lowers blood pressure, improves breathing, boosts the immune system, promotes wellbeing, helps improve memory, improves mental health, boosts your confidence and, importantly, singing together builds a sense of community. Above all, singing is fun, so come along and discover the benefits yourself.
A successful Torbay Council Community Fund Make a difference bid was made to enable Singing for Fun to get started. If you have an idea for a group/activity that would make a difference to your community but need a helping hand getting it started give me a call on 07702 557 723.
The first issue of the new Ellacombe & Plainmoor Community Magazine hit the streets last month to positive reviews and we are currently collating the second issue. Many folk came forward to deliver the first magazine in their street, and if you’d like to help with distributing the next issue, please get in touch; as the old proverb goes, many hands make light work. And remember, this is YOUR Community Magazine so we invite anyone and everyone in the area to contribute to it, perhaps sharing local stories, your hobbies or passions, or just giving us ideas of what you’d like to see in future issues.
Remember you can follow my Facebook page to keep up to date with what’s going on in Ellacombe and Plainmoor: www.facebook.com/UshacommunityBuilder/ . You are also welcome at our community drop-in on the second Monday of each month at Coopers Coffee House on Union Street between 10am and 12pm. The next one is on 10th October, where you can find out what’s happening in your neighbourhood and get support for your ideas for new projects. You can also come along just to say hello over a cuppa! It would be great to meet you.
