23 Oct A busy couple of months for the community in Kings Ash

My name is Sarah and I’m the Community Builder for Kings Ash, which includes Foxhole and QED areas of Paignton.  My role as a Community Builder is to bring communities together and help those in our community who may feel alone and isolated, feel more a part of their community.  Also, to highlight what great things are happening within our community.

It’s been a busy couple of months in Kings Ash, and there are some great things going on.  The Wellbeing Walking group is going from strength to strength, and we love to explore different places around the bay, especially the coffee shops!

At the Crafty Fox Community Hub in Foxhole, we have a coffee morning, where you can meet your neighbours and also me, your Community Builder.  Enjoy a fresh coffee and chat all for the price of £1.50, every Tuesday morning from 10:00 until 12:30.

I’ve been talking a lot with our younger residents too, and we’re working on a project to update the Shelter at Foxhole shops during half-term week.  Any young person in Foxhole who is interested in giving a hand, please let me know.

Crocheted pocket hearts, made by the Knit & Natter group, were given out during the Baton of Hope event on 30th September

The wonderful ladies at the knit and natter group held on Wednesday at the Crafty Fox, organised a fund-raising prize bingo for Breast Cancer awareness and raised over £200.  They were also busy and crocheted little hearts to give out at the Baton of Hope walk, as little hugs for people.  They were received with much gratitude.

The bereavement group is a wonderfully supportive group, also held at the Crafty Fox.  We enjoy chats on all sorts of subjects, lots of laughter and even plan outings and lunches.  Our next event is a trip to Exmouth for the day, and plans for our Christmas lunch are well underway.

Even through the summer holidays, the teams at Foxhole Community Centre and Great Parks community still put on some great events for the young people of Foxhole and QED.  The teams from SHAAQ and Foxhole Community Centre offered children free takeaway meals and are continuing to offer meals after school twice a week for young people.  Huge thanks must go to the Co-Op in Foxhole for donating £100 worth of cheese to the Centre.  I know the young people were very happy with cheese on their pasta and Jacket potatoes.

Great Parks Community Centre ran their fun day on Fridays through the summer too.  They did wonderful nature walks, gardening in the community garden, litter picks and Jonathan from Cycle Torbay did some Learn To Ride, bike ability and safe cycling courses and Level 2 cycling courses with the children.  Lots more young people know how to ride their bikes safely and how to look after them, thanks to the Cycle Torbay Team.
